Facebook (with updated link to an article supporting my views)

Skimming through and reading various posts by everyone I see that many people chose to debate the teacher/student facebook issue.

I was going to blog about this issue as well but thought it would be a popular choice so I chose to try a different topic.

The reason I wanted to talk about the facebook debate was because just recently I have had a few former students attempt to become “my friend” on facebook. I thought about this long and hard about what I should do. It seems as though most people are against the facebook friendship. I definitely see their point of view. But I decided to go the other way. I have since accepted these students as friends on facebook. This took much thought and it is something I have thought about for some time previous to the requests. I remember having a conversation with a former colleague about the same issue. Her opinion was its up to you and if you feel comfortable with it. Just from browsing facebook I have also noticed many former colleagues do in fact have students as their facebook friends. After these conversations and some very deep thought I then looked at my facebook profile. Do I have anything to hide? The answer is no. Everything I have on facebook is visible to people for a reason. I think it is important to share photos and different things via facebook with the people around you, including students. This shows them that maybe you are a human being after all and not some robot standing at the front of the classroom. Facebook also does a great job of giving you the ability to make parts of your information or profile visible to a select group of people.

Anyways, I just thought I would share my opinion about this. Facebook can be such a great thing and I am embracing its possibilities. Please vote on the poll and comment. Im interested to see the results.

I have recently been directed to this article that supports a positive view on the student-teacher facebook relationship
